19 Toddler Bedroom Ideas

Need some toddler bedroom ideas? Your baby is growing up! You don’t need to hold them all the time anymore. They’re more independent. You miss the days when your baby would lie on the floor and not do anything.

Now, they are all go, go, go. Before you knew it, they were climbing out of the crib.

Which means it’s time…

It’s time to switch to a toddler bed. This is a perfect time to change things up in their room. Your toddler has started to show off some of their personality already.

Some parents are going to disagree with some of my suggestions. They’ll say, “The bedroom is only for sleeping.”

That’s no fun!.. I get it, though. We all want our kids to be great sleepers. But honestly, our kids are great sleepers, and their bedroom doubles as a playroom.

If you’ve got the space to have a dedicated playroom for your kids, then sure. You can throw all the play stuff in there. I love giving our kids things to enjoy in their bedroom. It’s fun for them.

Wall Decals

I want to have this first on my list because they are great for all of the themes I suggest. They are easy to use and easy to remove.

They’ll add extra pizazz to your toddler’s room. I promise they’ll be excited for them.

Dinosaurs

Many of my toddler bedroom ideas revolve around themes you can use.

Who doesn’t love dinosaurs? I’m 30 and I’m still fascinated by them. Our oldest is the dinosaur fanatic in our house.

He knows as many names as I do. He has multiple dinosaur toys. The kid’s FAVORITE birthday present?… A dinosaur encyclopedia.

There are fun things you can do with a dinosaur theme.

Sports

There are some families that I’ve met… *cough* *cough*… my inlaws… that have an undying loyalty to a sports franchise.

My brother-in-law grew up with Steelers memorabilia all over his room, and honestly, it was pretty cool.

You don’t have to theme the room around a specific team, but you can have some baseball and basketball inspiration. You could turn their bed’s headboard into football field goal posts.

I’m still waiting to see if our 3rd baby is going to be our sporty one because I’m very excited to put his room together.

Princess

My little girl LOVES princesses. Queens DO NOT exist. Do you think Elsa is the queen? No. My girl will tell you she is the princess.

I don’t think you’ll find a more iconic toddler girl bedroom idea than a princess theme.

They get to wear the most beautiful dresses, they have amazing hair, and they have magical powers.

Of course, little girls want to be a princess for Halloween. As a father, I’d be a princess for the amazing hair and magical powers alone. The dresses are just a bonus.

Cars

The car-shaped toddler bed is an absolute CLASSIC. It is the go-to theme for a kid’s bedroom in Hollywood.

Other than the car-shaped bed, you can have tracks along the wall. A small Hotwheels set would be a lot of fun.

I’d probably steer clear (HA! Get it?) from heavier car toys. The last thing we want is a temper tantrum leading to a thrown 5 lb toy car.

Disney

Settle down, Disney adults. I said this is an article for toddler bedroom ideas.

Some families are in love with Disney. I don’t just mean that they watch all the movies. That’s what we do.

I’m talking about the families that go on an annual Disney Cruise. I’m jealous. I’ve been on one cruise in my life. It was a Disney cruise as a 22-year-old man. And it was amazing.

Disney has put out so much content at this point that there are endless ideas and ways to decorate a room with a Disney theme.

Outer Space

Space is aesthetically amazing. Not only that, it’s naturally dark. A good outer space theme is perfect for a sleep environment.

Hang up planets. Place glowing stars on the ceiling. Our toddlers love looking for the moon and stars at night. It’s even become part of our nightly bedtime routine to look for them.

Zoo

Toddlers love animals. They love the zoo. Before I had kids, I had never even been to a zoo. Now we go to at least 1 zoo every year.

A zoo-themed room is easy. Animal decorations on the walls. Zebra or cheetah prints on the furniture. Stuffed animals can be set up around the room.

Pick your toddler’s favorite biome and RUN with it.

Aquarium

We live near Atlanta, so we’ve visited the aquarium several times. Our youngest was about 13 months old when we last went. He LOVED it. He could have stayed there forever.

The ocean is majestic and peaceful. I won’t opt for having an actual aquarium in the room. I don’t want to clean it and don’t need my toddler messing with it.

Floor Bed

a toddler floor bed

Toddler floor beds make you feel more comfortable transitioning your kids out of the crib. Our kids move and roll around all night in their beds.

With a floor bed, they can’t fall far. They still have the extra space and can enter and exit easily.

Play Couch

a play couch shaped into house

A play couch is one of the best purchases we have made. Our kids were always trying to play with the couch and cushions in the living room. We bought a Kiidu play couch, and it’s their favorite thing.

They build forts, slides, and caves. This might be an unpopular suggestion because it’s a play couch, but they love it.

This is where our toddler bedroom ideas might become controversial.

At night, we sometimes use the big cushions as floor beds so our two older kids can sleep next to each other.

We have only had to take the couch out of the room twice because they wouldn’t stop playing with it at night. In my opinion, that’s not bad.

Swing

We bought a fabric swing to hang off the ceiling. It’s a great spot for our kids to get their energy out or to read. They don’t know how to read, but they have some books memorized. They flip the pages over as they recite them.

We have a short ceiling in their bedroom, so it’s easy to take it down every night. We don’t have to, but it can be done.

Reading Space

a reading nook

Reading is great for bedtime. It helps kids calm down and get into sleep mode. Give them a little spot that is dedicated to reading to help their bodies recognize that it’s time to calm down.

You can have a little chair for them. A little reading light that they can turn on and off themselves involves them more.

Cubbies

Cubbies are a great addition to your new reading space. Use them for books, toys, or anything else they might want.

Teepee

an indoor teepee for kids

I’ve seen a couple of houses that have miniature teepees in the bedroom or playroom. They’re awesome for toddlers to play and sit in. You can add it to the reading area, as well.

Blackout Curtains

Blackout curtains are another must for us. Our kids have slept so much better since getting them blackout curtains.

Just watch your step if you ever need to go into their rooms at night. I’ve stubbed my toes more than a few times.

Sound Machine Night Light

a night light in a toddler's bedroom

Our families don’t love that we use sound machines to help our kids. I don’t care what they think. The kids sleep better and we don’t have to tip-toe everywhere after they go to bed.

Our sound machine doubles as a night light. We can program it for different colors. We can set timers for the sound and light.

For a little while, we told our oldest that he wasn’t supposed to wake up until his light turned green. It stopped working. We didn’t try to keep enforcing it, but maybe that idea will work better for you.

Bed Slide

a bed slide

I had to add this to my list because I always wanted it. I grew up sleeping in the top bunk, and I would have been the coolest kid in school if I had a bed slide.

I’m also the dad who wants to put a slide at the top of the stairs because… well, why not?

Chalkboard Paint

What kid doesn’t draw on the walls? You have two choices. You let them find a way to draw on the walls, or you give them a way to draw on the walls.

Chalkboard paint will let your kids draw on the walls with chalk until their hearts’ content.

This is my last item on my list of toddler bedroom ideas. I hope I think of more to add to this list later as my kids grow up.
